Sam : Well….I’ve got my own theory to this…..I feel a sportsperson has to have a better IQ, instinct, pro activeness & zeal to learn than an average school going student.
While I say that – You don’t need to honestly isolate one from the other I feel. It’s about marrying the two together. Just learn to Juggle these two things and you’ll see the difference. Routines, time utilisation & overall self mgmt. is something that each sportsperson must learn to adopt at a very early age.

Let me give you an example – I have an 11 year old under me, who is the Captain of an IPL U14 team in India with tons of bowling & batting records to his name already. You’ll be shocked that he is also a fantastic student and gets into the TOP 5 of his class. That’s not bad at all. Trust me, he’s not over stressed. He’s just planned well. But, yes – there is NO time to waste for him in life. Its back to back –  even the time to chill is identified. There is a price you to have to pay to become very good at something.

Over the years I have given many solutions to people. Call me a hard task master if you must – but I believe that you can do well in both fields together. Most importantly one’s success reflects on the other sphere.
Being a sportsperson is a beautiful feeling and is emits positivity as long as you embrace the journey and harness its side effects on a daily basis.

Sam : Wow. We all wanna play Pro cricket. We all want to play for our country &We all want to have the world at our feet. But, very few do. I am always asked about the differences in successful cricketers & the not so successful ones. Then again – who are you and I to determine the not-so-successful ones. Maybe, their very own definition of success is different to yours & vice versa. Kind of philosophical, but this concept has a lot of depth. I can give you many examples of kids I’ve seen grow up and play various levels of cricket. The world may not know them as yet, but they are earning and live a far more satisfied life than many disgruntled corporate employees. You have to choose your own path and your own destination. Sometimes, you know when to get off the train. It may be earlier or later depending on how much of it you can chew.

There are very distinct differences between successful people and the others. Again, please don’t demarcate success & failure in black and white please. There’s a big grey out there. That grey is hard to explain unless you sit down with me and I take you through the process in person.

I, typically conduct Online Individual Mentoring sessions with my students to discuss these very details in person and in depth. I don’t like group mentoring sessions, because they are many a times useless and individual attention is needed.

To go back to your question on whether you can play PRO in Cricket? I need to understand YOU, the PARENT, the MINDSET & then determine the route to be taken. I believe in a diagnosis theory that leads to a road map. I don’t believe that you pick up a bat and a ball and voila / bingo – you have a cricketer J. Sports is TOUGH. Please get that before you embark on a journey that can help you live your dreams of being a PRO in Cricket.

Sam : WOW! Too many questions at one go!Hahahaa…… I have had the pleasure of living in most of the cricketing nations & playing there too. This includes Associate nations like Singapore where I spent a lot of time playing cricket in my early playing days. Loved each day of playing the games as I fell in love with the game more and more on a daily basis.

I won’t deny that India is now the Mecca for the game and rightly so. Especially if you’re a budding teenager. The sort of tough cricket you get to play from age 10-16 years of age in India is incredible. It puts you in place to compete at the highest level. Then again, I’m strictly talking about the kids who want to make it at that level.

The one thing I learnt by playing in so many conditions, pitch types, climates, topographies, dynamic teams, under highly skilled coaches etc etc is that NO TWO Matches are ever the same. You learn daily. You can be playing all your life in one city alone, but on various grounds with different grass cuts, pitch types and against different oppositions. Cricket will challenge you on a daily basis. Cricket is far more dynamic that what you think. There are too many variables at play here.

Let’s now talk about where I live now. That is indeed INDIA. Wow. I don’t know where to start. I have had so many kids from the age group of 9 – 29 visit us. They come for various reasons. Some to learn to play hard fought cricket and some to learn the art of spin bowling. I think many have been misled in the past by going to the wrong cities (without the infra), unsafe environments, unhealthy food & lack of transportation. Not forgetting the fact that they probably didn’t play with or / and against quality sides and got the required coaching. That was because the student or his/her parent short-changed themselves.

I may be a bit harsh pointing out the truth. But, hey – you’ve got to call a spade a spade. I’m not here to please anyone. I’m here to make champions and work on their mindsets. India is THE place as long as you find the right coach, right facility and do things properly. I am not here to sell one particular person or place. When I guide my students, they go back super happy.

Sam : A common question that I have on a daily basis to my NEW students : What does EVERYDAY Physcial Cricketing Practice do for you? The most common answer I get is – “It makes perfect”. And I say Great…Now I know that you need to be MENTORED J

Why………

Because Practice makes PERMANENT & not “perfect”.  It can be a GOOD PERMANENT or a BAD PERMANENT. Do you want to UNLEARN all the BAD you learn over these years? That’s like doing triple the work.

You first Learn BAD – then you Unlearn Bad – Then you Learn GOOD again. If you wanna do that, be my guest and go do that. I’ll be right here waiting for you to come back to me!!!

Another one of my reactions to this questions is….Please ASK yourself the difference between Donkey & a Horse (for those who speak Hindi – “Gadhe aur Ghode mein Kya Farak Hai?”)….. Simply put – let’s do smart work and not just hard work.

Come on, these theories are simples. It’s like the K.I.S.S theory in mgmt. books. Let’s do the basics right.

And last, but not the least – CRICKET is played with a stable head (technically) & within the Head (Mentally). Remember my words – even if you don’t consult me. Learn to Love the game….it’ll love you back. Don’t just run after the money.

Sam : I’ve developed a unique coaching Philosophy over the years. It’s changed each year to be honest. I didn’t want to hear it from other legendary coaches or from ex Int’l cricketers that I meet or talk with on a daily basis. I wanted to experience it on my own. I wanted to see kids grow up and then go on to fail or succeed. Hence, I learnt this philosophy by following multiple age groups.

I, now firmly believe EVERYONE can have or learn the so-called “right” technique. More so, technique is a relatively simple  individual art in a complex team game called cricket. Read this statement Again!!!! Absorb & then move on to the next thought.

I think an average player can hit the best cover drives on a perfect batting track all day long. That’s because everything is ceterus paribus. Does that make that player the one I want to work on, because he/she has many 100’s? You need to get to know me better than that. I have my own ways to see who “has it” & who “can make it”. It’s usually my job to make sure that those who “can make it” – actually do make it.

I also believe that if you score a scratchy / gritty 50 when you can’t seem to middle the ball all day long – you’re a player. Average players can hit 100’s in perfect conditions. Its about what you do in adversity and when nothing is as per your own expectations.

The pyramid of cricketing success stops at the “self actualisation” part (a la Maslow’s hierarchy), which is the “MENTAL ASPECT”. This is like an ocean of discussion. Each phase of this pyramid is a massive discussion in itself.
